Local companies team up to help NHS worker who was scammed by a cowboy builder

Laura Kirkman, a district nurse from Milton Keynes, was conned out of £3,000 by a man who said he would remodel her garden.

As a result, three local landscaping companies have stepped in and are doing the £15,000 garden makeover completely free of charge.

"I put on Facebook for a landscape gardener, got lots of quotes, and unfortunately picked the wrong one to come and do it," said Laura, who lives in Wavendon Gate.

"I paid him £3,000 for materials, which wasn't as shocking to me because most people had said you pay for materials and then you pay for the labour at the end. I thought that's what I'd been told already, so I didn't see anything different in it."

Once payment had been made, Laura lost contact with the man and later took to social media to warn others. When Golden Gardens and Building realised what had happened, they contacted other local landscapers and asked if they wanted to help.

Then, three companies, Golden Gardens and Building, GC landscapes, and Francis Rose Landscapes, all teamed up and offered to do the job.

"I don't do emotional," Laura continued. "I'm very tough with my emotions, but I did, it was really emotional because they were all so lovely."

The companies want to show their respect and admiration for frontline NHS workers and have since called Laura their hero. "I don't feel that way," Laura added. "I know that my job is important, but it's what I do every day and I love my job. And, I'm very lucky to say I love my job.

"I never thought I would work in a pandemic, but it's one of those things that has turned up and we all do our best. Everyone that is working to help people right now is amazing. But these guys are my heroes, that's the thing."

Zane Keeble, from Golden Gardens and Building, told MKFM: "There are too many con artists in the landscaping industry. And, too many people are using this situation to con people. We're want to give the nation something to feel uplifted about, and show people how they should treat each other.

"We just want to show some appreciation for the people that are going out to work and risking their lives for us."
