Last night, an updated Council Plan was approved by Milton Keynes Council, supported by the Liberal Democrat Group.
Since signing their partnership agreement on 1st May 2020, the Liberal Democrat and Labour Groups have been working on an updated Council Plan that "continues to provide the people of Milton Keynes with the stable leadership that is needed now more than ever, as we look to the recovery of our city".
The updated Council Plan is based on the joint key manifesto priorities of both parties, which have been updated to take into consideration the circumstances of the current pandemic.
Councillor Douglas McCall, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said: “I’m pleased that the Council Plan has been passed, and that our manifesto has been incorporated.”
The Newport Pagnell South councillor continued: “As Liberal Democrats we are determined to pursue our priorities, especially tackling poverty and homelessness, improving our health and social care, building a stronger economy and keeping the budget balanced – we can do this through the Council Plan.”
Speaking on the ‘Inequality and Poverty’ section of the Plan, Liberal Democrat Children and Families spokesperson Councillor Jane Carr said: “As we look to the recovery from COVID-19, we must support those families who were hardest hit financially. The Liberal Democrats called for the Child Poverty Commission to be created last year, and it is vital for the Council to action the Commission’s report, now more than ever.”
Councillor Robin Bradburn, the group’s spokesperson for Finance and Resources, said: “Milton Keynes will feel the financial impact of COVID-19 in the coming years, and so it is crucial that the Council has a balanced budget and prudent level of reserves. That is what the Liberal Democrats will be fighting for.”
The Group’s Health and Adult Social Care spokesperson, Councillor Andy Reilly, said: “The recent crisis has hit the elderly hardest, and I welcome the plan’s commitment to support our social care and health care partners. We shouldn’t underestimate how difficult that may be under the constraints we’re likely to face, but the council is right to make that commitment.”
