Labour councillors pledge 'Summer of Play' for children all over Milton Keynes

MK Labour has pledged that all children will have access to play, sports and activities this summer.

This comes after concerns have been expressed that after almost a year of not being able to socialise with friends or family, it may take a significant amount of time for children and young people to adapt to the new normal.

The MK Labour group has said that if restrictions allow, and if they retain control of the council in May's election, they will fund activities for children and young people including outdoor learning, physical activities, sports and play to help children re-socialise.

Cllr Zoe Nolan, Cabinet member for Children and Families said: “A Labour-run council will not allow young people to pay the price for the pandemic. We want our children and young people to be happy.

"It will take time for many children to readjust after the pandemic. Making sure all children have access to out-door activity over the summer is vital to mental and physical health.”

The Labour “Promise to Families” also includes a pledge that they will help to fund access to homework clubs for children from low income backgrounds to help catch up on any missed learning over the COVID-19 period.

Cllr Nolan said: “We will also promise to fund access to homework clubs for all children so they can catch up on any education they may have missed, starting in the new school year in September.”
