Here's how to protect your car as police notice an increase in vehicle crime...

Thames Valley Police has seen an increase in vehicle crime lately, particularly in West Bletchley.

Offenders have been trying to open car doors in the area recently, and in some cases even gaining access to the vehicle and stealing items from the car.

"We are doing what we can to investigate this and apprehend offenders; and would encourage residents to report any suspicious activity to us," said a police spokesperson.

In the meantime, police have shared some advice on how to protect your vehicle from possible car theft. It includes:

Remove all items from the vehicle

Police say that most criminals are opportunists meaning that they take what they can when they see it. So, if a vehicle looks empty then it is likely that they will leave it alone. This way, even if offenders gain access to your car, they won't be able to steal anything.

Do not leave items on display

This is important, especially valuable items. It is recommended that you either take your property with you when you get out of the car or keep items locked in the boot and out of sight.

"Even things like an old coat, sunglasses or loose change can be a temptation for someone to ‘smash and grab’ - they steal first and think about value later," TVP added.

Sat Navs and dash cams should be removed too

Criminals have been known to break into vehicles to steal portable Sat Navs or dashcams. Even if you have removed the device, make sure you wipe off any sucker marks as it says that the device may still be in the car.

Show that there is nothing to steal

Police even recommend leaving your empty glove box and centre console open so that it is clear that there is nothing to steal.

Lock and close windows and doors

Although this may seem obvious, it is easy to forget to close your window or forget to lock your car doors. It is important to secure your vehicle at all times - do not leave it insecure even just for a second while you go into the petrol station, for example.

If you have a garage, use it

This is one of the securest ways to store a vehicle. If you don’t have a garage always try to park in a well lit open place in public view.
