MK Council in partnership with the MK Discovery Centre (MKDC) has launched a new initiative to coincide with Bike Week 2020.
‘MK Explorer Virtual Volunteers’ are encouraged to cycle around the city and take photos of MK’s heritage sites to add to a proposed New Town Heritage Register. Photos can be considered for inclusion if they’re publicly shared on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with a short description of the heritage site using the #MKVirtualDesignTrail hashtag.
To help, the MKDC website has information available on some of the best buildings and places in MK for people to research before they go exploring. MK Council's YouTube channel also contains all the information for each activity in 60 second video tutorials.
The launch is part of a wider programme of MK Explorer Virtual Volunteer activities designed for all ages, including creating a future #MK2050City with your own masterplan drawing or trying the online MK New Town survey to share your thoughts about MK’s current heritage offer.
Councillor Carole Baume, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “Moving the New Town Heritage Explorers project online has given even more opportunities for people and communities to enjoy their heritage, to connect with the area they live in and share their experiences with others. I’d encourage as many people as possible to get out on their bikes and visit the amazing sights MK has to offer.”
Dr Noël James, Director of the MK City Discovery Centre, said: “Milton Keynes has an incredible history and heritage dating back beyond Roman times. I am delighted that the New Town Heritage Explorers Project will document the modern history of Milton Keynes, its internationally important design heritage and that people get to show online as Virtual Volunteers why they love it so much.”
Further creative activities under the banner of #MKHomeDesignCity are planned across the Summer, running until MK’s Heritage Open Days in September.
