Government in Milton Keynes rail jobs re-assurance

Commitment given to protecting jobs at MK Network Rail.

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting jobs at Network Rail in Milton Keynes, after it was confirmed that Great British Railways will be based in Derby.

In response to a joint letter from Cllr Pete Marland, Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, along with the city’s three Labour MPs Emily Darlington, Callum Anderson and Chris Curtis, Rail Minister Lord Hendy has issued reassurance that there are ‘no plans to uproot existing centres of excellence on the railways estate’.

While Great British Railways will be headquartered in Derby, the government has provided confidence that the role in which the rail network plays in the city, including at The Quadrant in Milton Keynes, will be built on during GBR’s establishment, with no negative impact to local roles.

“This reassurance confirms that our city will remain a key player in Britain’s railways,” said Councillor Pete Marland. “Our city is home to thousands of high-quality, skilled workers and we’re pleased to hear these jobs will remain secure.”

“Milton Keynes is proud of its rail heritage and workforce,” added Emily Darlington MP for MK Central. “The Government’s commitment gives clarity and peace of mind to those working hard in our city. We will continue our work to ensure that Milton Keynes remains at the heart of Britain’s railway for years to come.”

“Milton Keynes has always had strong links with the railway industry, from Network Rail to Wolverton, one of the world's longest-running railway works,” said Chris Curtis MP for MK North. “Protecting these jobs in Milton Keynes is vital.”

“This reassurance recognises our city’s crucial contribution to the network and protects key jobs that support our city’s economy,” commented Callum Anderson MP for Buckingham and Bletchley. “We will continue to champion investment in our local rail industry.”
