Giant 'Egg House' to arrive on MK's Grand Union Canal

It's been announced that a giant wooden egg house will be moored at the canalside at Stanton Low Park before slowly floating to a new mooring at Great Linford.

The egg house, known as the 'Exbury Egg', will be at the Stanton Low Park location from 3 April to 8 May before moving to Great Linford where it will remain until 14 May.

The egg house is part of a free exhibition by artist Stephen Turner called ‘Everything Comes from the Egg’ and is part of the MK50 birthday celebrations happening throughout the year. The exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday between 12 noon and 6pm.

The aim of the exhibition is to show how art can be used to represent and engage with environmental issues.  A free ‘Kids Guide to the Exbury Egg’ booklet will also be handed out including hand-drawn illustrations and activities aimed at inspiring children and young people about the project.

At the exhibition, Stephen’s artworks and documentations from his journey around the UK in the egg can be viewed. Additional works will also be on display at the Milton Keynes Art Centre from Wednesday 10 May – Sunday 14 May in the Old Schoolhouse.

The Exbury Egg was featured on Channel 4’s ‘George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces’ and has won a number of awards including RIBA Small Project Award 2014, winner of RIBA South Award 2014 and winner of LEAF Sustainable Interior of the Year Award, 2013.

The ‘house’ (which is registered as a boat) cost £40,000 and took just six months to build. It is made from two wooden halves fixed together and covered with a membrane to keep it watertight.

The 40ft self-sustaining structure has an open plan interior which includes everything the artist needs to live inside including a desk, bed and bathroom.

Originally created for a coastal location is has already toured around a number of locations in the UK including most recently London’s Trinity Buoy Wharf. Stephen has written over 200 blogs detailing his travels which can be viewed at www.exburyegg.me and information about his stopover in Milton Keynes can be found here www.exburyeggtour.com/miltonkeynes.html.
