Former alcoholic launches first sober night out for Milton Keynes

A recovering alcoholic is to host a ‘sober night out’ in the new city later this month, and is inviting as many people to join her in raising a glass of something alcohol free on the night.

Melanie Prince knows first-hand how devastating the effects of excessive drinking can be.

“Addiction caused me to lose custody of my children, I ended up going to prison and was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis,” she told MKFM.

“This event is really personal to me and I hope it’s the start of many sober events in the local area.”

Melanie is now seven years sober and has since used her wisdom to help 100s of others across Milton Keynes on their journey to stop drinking.

“This is the only 'Dry Disco' in the area and as more and more people are stepping away from alcohol I want to give them a space to go out, dance, listen to great music and meet new friends without the worry of alcohol being involved.

The event - on February 28 - is being held at The Grand Sultan in the Theatre District, with an assembly of DJs playing house tracks between 8pm and 1am.

    Dancers will also perform.

“I taught myself to DJ 18 months ago and I want to take away the narrative that house music events go hand in hand with substance misuse - whether that be alcohol or drugs,” Melanie said.

The Grand Sultan is a completely dry venue, which boasts a comprehensive bar serving a variety of drinks including wine, champagne, mocktails and spirits, all 0% - there is no alcohol on the premises.

Food will also be served, and with the venue being free from booze, the age limit for this event has been lowered to 16.

Tickets are £5, with money donated to DAFS - Drug & Alcohol Family Support.

Purchase from Skiddle or pay £5 charity donation on the door.
