Bonfires
What NOT To Do
- Do not use flammable liquids to start a bonfire
- Do not burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries
- Do not leave bonfires unattended. An adult should supervise the bonfire until it has burnt out. If it has to be left, damp it down with plenty of water
What TO Do
- Build your bonfire well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges
- Always keep a bucket of water or hosepipe nearby in case of fire
- Check the area to make sure there is not wildlife or any pets hiding nearby
- Take into consideration what you are burning. Remember the greener the waste, the more smoke it produces. This may affect your neighbours, and even cause concerned citizens to call the fire and rescue service to report a fire
- Consider alternatives to bonfires include composting, and checking if your local council offers a garden waste collection service
