Safety week marked with tips for canal boat users.

Milton Keynes fire service experts have released a series of boat fire safety tips for waterway users living or travelling in the area.

The advice comes from Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service during Boat Fire Safety Week, which runs until 1st June. It’s aimed at educating water lovers who use their vessels on Milton Keynes’ waterways, including canal boat and houseboat owners.

The Grand Union Canal, which runs through Milton Keynes, is a popular stretch of water for enthusiasts and holidaymakers.

The service’s boat fire information includes prevention tips, what to do in the event of a blaze, boating at night, refuelling, gas and carbon monoxide awareness.

“Fire can spread rapidly on a boat – even surrounded by water,” said a Bucks Fire spokesperson. “Since April 2021 we have attended 16 incidents involving houseboats, nearly half of those were fires.

“Sadly, in 60% of those fires, the boats were completely destroyed. And only 40% of the boats had a working smoke alarm on board.

As we mark Boat Fire Safety Week, follow these essential tips to protect yourself, your passengers, and your crafts.
