The family of swans are now in the care of a sanctuary.

A family of swans have been rescued from a canal in Milton Keynes.

The swans had been coated in oil which is thought to have come from a leaking barge, leading to a member of the public making a phone call to Bryan Lea,  Allie Short and Helen Shield from the MK Swan rescue team.

The family is now in the care of The Waterfowl Sanctuary, near Huntingdon.

"The greasy mess encircles the bird as they swim through it and so the lower half requires a good lathery effort in warm water to shift it," a spokesperson from The Waterfowl Sanctuary explained.

"Fortunately when we installed these very useful wetrooms we placed a water heater in the roof for this very purpose."

"Each bird received a good soaking whilst the oils gradually came away turning the water to a shocking colour.

The swans will be returned in a few days once they've returned to show condition.
