EXCLUSIVE: Milton Keynes is the worst area for homeless families in the UK with 800 in temporary accommodation

The Leader of Milton Keynes Council Peter Marland has exclusively revealed to MKFM that Milton Keynes is the worst area in the UK for homeless families per head of the population, with 800 families in temporary accommodation.

The news means that Milton Keynes now has proportionately more homeless families than areas like London and Birmingham, with 1,000 children being part of the 800 families who are now legally classed as homeless.

Cllr Peter Marland said that rising rents in our area as well as wages being depressed means more and more families are seeking accommodation from the Council.

He also revealed that the council would need to put an additional £4m to £5m into temporary accommodation in the next financial year, and that budgets for other Council services would need to be cut in order to meet that funding demand.

In terms of rough sleeping, Cllr Marland said there were around 80 rough sleepers on record in our Borough, with around 30 of those being in the position for a longer period of time.

He added that Council services are there to help rough sleepers but added that more work needed to be done to make them work more effectively together.

Cllr Peter Marland will be joining Darren D on The MKFM Mid Morning Show from 12pm on Wednesday 28th June 2017.
