England captain Leah Williamson awarded Freedom of the City of Milton Keynes

The England captain has been awarded Freedom of the City in her hometown.

Milton Keynes born Leah Williamson was last night (28 February) awarded Freedom of the City of Milton Keynes.

Following a 2-1 victory against eight-time champions Germany, the Lionesses created history last summer with the first major tournament title win for an England team since 1966.

Williamson, who was born and raised in Newport Pagnell, plays for Arsenal and was named captain ahead of the summer tournament.

Following a call from local leaders, MK City Council has now awarded the England Captain Freedom of the City.

Leah Williamson is the first person to be given Freedom of the City since Milton Keynes gained the title as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The Freedom of the City is an honour given by a local council in recognition of exceptional service and achievements.

It is one of the oldest lasting traditional ceremonies.

"Congratulations to MK-born England Captain Leah Williamson, who (tonight) received Freedom of the City of Milton Keynes in recognition of her achievements," the City Council said.

Milton Keynes had several proud links to the successful tournament last summer.

Stadium MK hosted four games - including one of the all-important semi-final matches. The semi-final game's attendance of 27,445 at Stadium MK made it the biggest crowd to ever attend a UEFA Women’s EURO semi-final not involving the host nation.

Milton Keynes was chosen as one of nine cities sitting front and centre hosting one of the biggest women’s European sport event in history.

The England captain described the feeling of winning as the proudest moment in her life.
