Driver walks away with 'minor hand injuries' as M1 re-opens after lorry overturns

The driver of a lorry which overturned on the M1 motorway this morning has walked away with 'minor hand injuries', according to local media.

The M1 motorway was closed in both directions near Northampton at just before 8am on Wednesday morning after a lorry overturned on the southbound carriageway.

Local newspaper The Daventry Express reports that the driver of the lorry suffered "a few scratches on his hands."

The road has now re-opened southbound between J15A at Northampton Services and J16 for Daventry following a clean-up operation.

National Highways Duty Operations Manager, Jo Dean said: "This is a complex incident and we’re working hard to get the affected part of the M1 southbound back open to motorists as soon as it is safe to do so."

"We’re still working at scene alongside specialist recovery teams to remove the lorry and while that process continues, we’d advise motorists to avoid using the M1 southbound while we deal with the incident. We’d like to thank people for their patience while we carry out this work."

Northants Police and emergency services were in attendance being assisted by National Highways Traffic Officers.

A diversion route was in place for drivers via the A43/A5123/A5076/A4500.

All traffic which was caught within the closure has now been released.
