Councillors join YCAB to back anti-bullying message

Young people from MK’s Youth Cabinet (YCAB) have presented their hard-hitting anti-bullying campaign to councillors as part of Anti-Bullying Week this week.

Mahi Joshy, and Georgia Gray, from YCAB shared the group’s striking ‘See Sense – Stop Bullying’ posters with the council’s Cabinet and also brought the campaign to life with some poignant case studies from peers who have experienced bullying first hand.

The campaign focuses on key bullying issues affecting young people today: race and religion, lesbian, gay and bi-sexual (LGBT) and disability.

Mahi said: “It was great to be able to share our campaign with councillors. We were really pleased with their positive reaction. Bullying affects so many young people and we hope our work will help spread the message that we are all equal and bullying of any kind needs to stop.”

YCAB, which is made up of more than 30 young people aged 11-19, made the commitment to the campaign in its manifesto after almost 4,000 young people from across MK voted for this to be a priority during the election process last year.

Council Leader, Pete Marland, said: “This is a great piece of work. I know the campaign has been gaining a lot of interest within schools with some great feedback. We are pleased to support YCAB and help drive home the message that bullying is never acceptable."

The posters are being displayed in all secondary schools in Milton Keynes, as well as other key venues across the city. You can download them and read the case studies at www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/stopbullying
