MK Council Leader: Tories are 'gerrymandering' parliamentary boundaries in 'anti-democratic' manner

The Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Cllr Peter Marland, is calling on Conservative MPs in Milton Keynes to vote against the proposed boundary review which will see some areas moved into Buckingham.

MKFM revealed yesterday that final proposals for new parliamentary constituencies from Boundary Commission England will see Stony Stratford and Wolverton move into the Buckingham constituency, if approved by parliament.

The new proposals will see both the Milton Keynes North and South constituencies shrunk in terms of area to reflect the increased population since the boundaries were last drawn.

But in a controversial move, the areas of Wolverton, Crownhill, Stony Stratford, Greenleys, Old Wolverton, New Bradwell, Blue Bridge and Bancroft Park move into the Buckingham constituency.

The seat will be renamed 'Buckingham and Milton Keynes West' under the plans.

Speaking to MKFM, Cllr Peter Marland said: “The idea that a huge proportion of people from Milton Keynes living in Wolverton, New Bradwell, Stony Stratford and other places in MK could end up with representation in Parliament in a seat which includes Buckingham and stretches down to Princes Risborough is quite clearly ludicrous."

"I think most people will really see what this is all about. It is clearly one political party seeking to Gerrymander the system to suit themselves. It is anti-democratic and absurd. I am calling on our current two Tory MPs to put the interests of the city above their self-interest, keep MK together and publicly oppose these plans today, call for them to be scrapped and vote against them if they are every brought before parliament.”

Milton Keynes Conservatives declined to comment.
