Could jobs at Argos head office in Milton Keynes be at risk?

Sainsbury’s has played down rumours of a move from London and Milton Keynes to Leeds as part of the proposed merger with ASDA.

The supermarket chain have been keen to point out that any merger will see the two businesses remain separate.

But reports suggest that management jobs could be cut at Sainsbury’s as a result of its £14 billion merger with Asda who are currently based in Leeds.

The concerns have been raised following a letter from Mike Coupe, Chief Executive at Sainsbury’s, to MP Rachel Reeves. Mr Coupe noted that there is no guarantee that every job will remain the same.

He wrote: "We would expect that a very low number of well-paid managerial roles will be duplicated across the Group."

The company already removed duplicated roles in central offices after acquiring high street retailer Argos.

Sainsbury's, who have owned Milton Keynes based Argos since 2015, originally promised that there wouldn't be any job losses at the Avebury Boulevard head office.

MKFM understands that a number of jobs in Milton Keynes have been cut at Argos with some job roles being transferred to Sainsbury's head office in London.

This was despite promises to the Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Cllr Peter Marland, from Sainsbury's during the acquisition of Argos that jobs and the head office in Milton Keynes were safe.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was inviting interested parties to comment on the impact of the deal between Sainsbury's and ASDA ahead of a formal "phase one" inquiry.
