Conservative Group Leader: MK Council 'have been so slack' in dealing with rubbish situation

The Conservatives Group Leader on Milton Keynes Council, Cllr Andrew Geary, has said that Milton Keynes Council 'have been so slack' in dealing with the ongoing waste and recycling issues in Milton Keynes.

The news comes as green waste collections were suspended last night to allow crews to catch up with other collections, where 15,000 households are currently experiencing a delay.

In a statement to MKFM, Mr Geary: "Well, what a mess, literally a mess. It reminds me somewhat of the childhood memories I have of the streets in 1979 following the winter of discontent. Are we about to have the weeks of discontent in Milton Keynes? How on earth can a company of Serco's experience supposedly underestimate so badly the amount of refuse there would be."

"Ok, we've had a couple of broken down vehicles, but they've been put right, extra crews and resources pulled in, and they still can't get on top of it. It does beg the question what is going on. But the blame isn't all with SERCO. Why have the Council been so slack in getting on top of this? Where was the political intervention to get a grip of the situation."

"It's been poor since 28th December, 10 days later and it's getting worse, not better. All we've heard from the Political Leadership is a thin apology at Cabinet for the temporary problems which should be resolved soon. Frankly it's poor, very poor, and I believe it shows gross incompetence right across the Council at both a managerial and political level!"

Confusion was compounded after the Council tweeted earlier yesterday to say green bin collections were running on time, before then deciding to suspend the collections later in the evening.
