Community appeal launched to help support caring couple following fire

Neighbours of a couple affected by a recent fire in Olney have put a call out for help from the community.

Earlier this month a Campervan fire spread to a nearby property, devastating a garage and workshop belonging to Paul and Ann Watts.

Now fellow resident Kelly Ikin is appealing for support to clear the rubble and replace the space.

“They are an adorable couple who do so much for their community, and they've not had the best of times recently – they were made redundant from the care home they ran when it was bought out, and Paul's garage and workshop has always been more than just a garage. It is a place where he found peace, comfort and a vital escape from daily stresses,” Kelly told MKFM.

“The fire didn’t just destroy the space; it took away irreplaceable tools, cherished belongings, and a place where he could relax and be himself. Sadly, the neighbours involved were the main ones affected too, making this an even more difficult situation for everyone.

“Paul is 71, and isn't in the best of health, but he was still out trying to save his garage to no avail. He hasn't left the house once since.

“I hope that the community Paul and Ann have helped so much can come together to give some help back,” Kelly said.

She is looking for physical help clearing debris and rebuilding, requires the loan of a skip, donations of building materials, tools or equipment and any financial support to cover costs for materials.

“Whether it’s a few hours of your time, a donation, or simply by spreading the word, every bit helps,” she added, “Let’s show him the care and support he’s shown our community over the years and help restore his safe space.”
