Clap for Carers to return this week under new name Clap for Heroes

The weekly Clap for Carers will be returning and rebranding to Clap for Heroes, it has been today announced (6/1).

Milton Keynes residents will once again be taking to their doorsteps, this time in the cold, to applaud those working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday at 8pm, people are being called on to applaud all "heroes".

Annemarie Plas, the organiser of the weekly applause, said: "We are bringing back the 8pm applause, in our 3rd lockdown I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us. Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and ALL who is pushing through this difficult time!"

The announcement has since divided opinion, with some saying it is a good idea, while others feel it is patronising.

Last month, MKFM asked its social media followers whether they thought the weekly ritual should return, and the vast majority of respondents said no.

Several NHS workers also expressed their experience of how the clap for carers apparently turned into a competition in their neighbourhood to see who could be the loudest.
