Christmas waste up by a third, meaning collection delays may continue in Milton Keynes

It has been revealed that there have been 'unprecedented' levels of waste this festive season, increasing by a third.

Milton Keynes Council says that waste collection crews have collected more than 1,400 tonnes of refuse in the past week alone.

Usually, preparations are made by the council, and its waste contractor Serco, as levels commonly rise by around a fifth each Christmas.

But last week's collections have been far higher - with a rise in volume of around a third – likely impacted by Milton Keynes’ Tier 4 lockdown and more people at home.

Glass collections alone were up by more than 70%.

Because of this, many people across the city have reported delays in waste collection. Milton Keynes Council has since apologised, and says they aimed to be up to date by the end of yesterday.

"However, we are still expecting more waste than usual this week, adding pressure to the crews," said a council spokesperson. "This means your regular collection may overrun to the next day. If this is the case, please put out any non-collected waste and recycling on the next working day.

"We are working closely with our partner Serco and have added further additional crews."

Waste collections are currently running on a revised schedule, which can be found here.

Normal waste collection days resume from Monday 18 January.
