Winners of this year’s Councillor for Children’s Inclusion Award were recently treated to a celebratory afternoon tea by Milton Keynes Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Zoe Nolan.

The afternoon tea was hosted by Network Rail at their headquarters in Central Milton Keynes, and it was a chance for this year’s 12 winners to come together and celebrate one another’s successes.

Those in attendance, which included school heads and special educational needs teachers, discussed what it was that made their schools so inclusive.

They agreed that having high aspirations for all children, understanding and being committed to the importance of working closely and collaboratively with parents were highly important in creating an inclusive learning environment.

They also talked about having a strengths-based approach and realising that inclusion brings benefits to everyone in school.

Cllr Nolan said: “I wanted to celebrate the way these 12 schools have shown how inclusion can be so successful in our schools.”

“It was uplifting to hear how much they had done to ‘go the extra mile’ for children and we have much to learn from them.  I congratulate them all and thank Network Rail for facilitating our visit.”

School heads and special educational needs teachers were treated to tea and cake, as well as a guided tour of the Network Rail offices.
