"Make sure your feline friends can keep preening, pouncing and purring for the rest of their days," is the message from Cats Protection’s Milton Keynes & District Branch.

The branch recently took into its care a 14 year old named Corky whose owner had sadly passed away, he was in poor physical condition when he was taken in by the branch, with fleas, bites and scratches from having to fend for himself in his owner’s back garden for a few weeks but there could have been an alternative for Corky in the form of the charity’s Cat Guardian’s service, the charity says.

Belle O’Connor who volunteers for the branch explains: “The Cat Guardians service can give you complete peace of mind and avoid situations like Corky's.Once you have registered your cats for the service, Cats Protection will take your cat into care and find them a loving home after you die.”

Georgia Hardy, Cats Protection’s Senior Cat Guardians Marketing Officer, says: “Cat Guardians is a free service where we promise to take any cats a supporter owns into our care should they pass away before their pets.

"While there is no cost for using the service, many people who register also choose to remember Cats Protection in their Will. These gifts are vital to us, as they fund almost half of the work we do to help cats and kittens, like Corky, across the UK.”

It’s a happy ending for Corky, despite being extremely anxious and spending his first few weeks hiding under his foster carer's sofa, he has made great progress and gained confidence in the safe environment provided for him by the branch.

Corky’s fosterer has worked with Cats Protection’s behaviour team to ensure Corky was given the correct care needed to help him through the sad loss of his owner.

“I couldn’t be happier with how things have turned out for this beautiful boy. This is one of my proudest foster moments, watching this timid boy become brave,” says branch fosterer Ann Brownbill, who cared for Corky while he was with the branch.

Corky has now found a loving new home, and his new family will continue to work with the Cats Protection behaviour team to help him settle happily into his new life.
