The genetically modified organism is not used in European produce.
Mars Wrigley is recalling certain M&M's due to a genetically modified organism (GMO) in one of the ingredients.
The chocolate is sold at most Milton Keynes supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda.
Tesco said: “Mars Wrigley are recalling M&M’s Crispy products due to a genetically modified organism (GMO) in one of the ingredients.
“Due to customer preference, GMOs aren’t used in Mars Wrigley products in Europe, which is the reason for this recall.”
Customers are warned not to eat the product and to arrange a return and refund.
The company issued a statement: “We have undertaken a thorough tracing exercise to determine the locations of the affected products. We can also confirm we have halted all production using the affected ingredient and have placed a hold on all products made with the impacted batch.
"We will work with the supplier who provided the ingredient to ensure thorough checks are in place to ensure the issue does not recur. No other Mars Wrigley brands, products, batch codes or best before dates are affected.”
