Cencus 2021 results show just how much the population of Milton Keynes has grown in 10 years

The first lot of Cencus 2021 results show that the population of Milton Keynes is growing faster than the national average.

Early results from the Census, which was carried out in 2021, show that that the population of Milton Keynes is growing - and is still one of the youngest.

There were 59,597,300 people living in England and Wales on 21 March 2021, the day of the latest census.

Since the previous Census in 2011, Milton Keynes has seen its population grow to 287,821. This is a 15.3% increase, which is above the national average of 6.3%. The city has also seen one of two of the largest increases in the South East, the other being Dartford.

The population of older age groups - above 65 - has also grown. With 13.8% of people in MK being over 65, compared to 11.1% 10 years prior. Despite this, MK still has one of the youngest populations.

The new city's population is also made up by 49.3% male and 50.7% female, according to the 2021 Cencus results.

The Census happens every 10 years and gives the The Office for National Statistics a picture of households across England and Wales. It also helps the government, councils, and health authorities plan and fund public services like transport, education and health – from cycle routes and schools to green spaces and dental surgeries.

The first results released today (28/6), include estimates of the number of people and households in England and Wales.

They show the number of people by sex and age at local authority level, rounded to the nearest 100.
