Captain Tom Moore, age 99, has raised over a MILLION pounds for the NHS

The national hero from Marston Moretaine has raised over 1.3 million pounds for the NHS, with the total going up in the thousands by the minute.

His birthday challenge - to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday - has caught the nation's attention.

Just last week, the WW2 veteran spoke to MKFM and was delighted that he had raised nearly £8,000 for the NHS. Little did he know that in the days to come, he would draw the support of the country, with Piers Morgan even donating £10,000 of his own money to the cause.

Captain Tom's initial target of £1,000 was exceeded in the first 24 hours, and since, donations haven't stopped rolling in.

Over a million pounds have been donated by tens of thousands of supporters. Every penny will go to NHS Charities Together to support healthcare workers who are battling the coronavirus pandemic.

Tom has commended the NHS for the "incredible" service that he has received in the past, having been treated for a broken hip and skin cancer.

He now wants to give back to those working "so hard", who are "so tired" and are "really doing so well" during the current climate.

On his 100th birthday, Tom was due to celebrate by having a large party with 100 guests, but this has since had to be cancelled. Dozens of celebrities, including Jason Donovan, have since sent Tom birthday wishes via social media.

Captain Tom will complete the 2.5k distance (1.6 miles) before his birthday 30th April. Would you like to support our local hero and donate to his birthday challenge? You can do so here
