As many of you will know, Camphill MK are in the process of building new, accessible homes for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Part of the Capital Plan expansion programme at Camphill MK, the first house building phase is in Pennyland, Milton Keynes.
Founded in 1981, Camphill Milton Keynes is a place where people with learning disabilities and autism are encouraged and supported to reach their potential through the experience of living, learning, working, and celebrating in the community with others. The goal is to provide a strong supportive environment where residents can gain self-confidence and personal independence within a safe and enabling environment.
Based on the founding ideals of Karl Koenig and Rudolf Steiner, the Camphill Movement was formed in the 1940s. Its foundation in Scotland has grown to include over 135 settings worldwide, with more than 35 communities in the United Kingdom and Ireland. At the heart of Camphill is the founding principle that people with disabilities are defined by their humanity rather than their disability. Focussing on creativity, capacity to learn and contribute to society, meaningful work, dignity and respect, these founding principles remain entirely valid today, and the impact of this approach to support is tangible and valued by residents, families and staff.
Camphill Milton Keynes residents and other beneficiaries are busy people who participate daily in various inspirational and meaningful projects and activities, including horticulture, arts and crafts, tools refurbishment, food production, music, drama, technology and journalism. They are delivered from various creative and uplifting workshops, including a Café and theatre, and facilities visited and used by the general public.
More than 70 adults live permanently at Camphill, and each resident is encouraged to live and work as independently as possible within a social and supportive environment. Within our care and support activities, we support our people to demonstrate what they can achieve rather than focus solely on limitations that may traditionally be seen in disability.
