Campaigners demonstrate at local hospitals to save the NHS

Health campaigners braved the rain and cold on Saturday at Bedford, Milton Keynes and Luton & Dunstable Hospitals.

The action was in support of the NHS and health workers. Local MPs, Mohammad Yasin and Kelvin Hopkins and local councillors joined campaigners, health workers and families to call for an immediate increase in funding for the NHS and an end to cuts in services such as the threatened closure of Putnoe walk-in centre in Bedford.

Health campaigners are also calling for the NHS to end the Sustainability and Transformation Partnership which has been dragging on for 7 years in various forms and has created uncertainty about the future of Accident and Emergency, Paediatric and Maternity services in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes. Instead, campaigners want the millions of pounds being spent on the review process to be invested in patient care.

Kevin Vickers of Save Milton Keynes Hospital said: “The three demonstrations on 20 Jan were a big success. People turned out in significant numbers to show their support for our cherished NHS. Our next step is to take the fight for the NHS to the national demonstration in London on 3 February. We will march together in unity – Hands off Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes NHS.
