Buckingham University's upcoming graduation ceremonies cancelled over fears of COVID-19

The University of Buckingham announced yesterday (3/3) that this month's upcoming graduation ceremonies have been cancelled to "minimise risk" of aiding coronavirus.

Students were due to graduate on 20 and 21 March, however, this has been postponed for a later date which is not yet known.

Sir Anthony Seldon, the Vice-Chancellor, issued an apologetic statement to those graduating. It read: "This has been a very difficult decision for the University to make. However, in the light of the Government's precautionary warnings regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), the daily increase in cases, and potential travel restrictions, we believe this to be the best decision for all of you and your guests.

"I know that this will be a huge disappointment and I truly apologise for the upset and inconvenience. But it is important to minimise the risk to all students and guests. Regrettably, we are not able to provide an alternative date at this time but will contact all graduates by email as soon as we are able to reschedule.

"There is nothing that we want more than to celebrate your achievements in the way that your hard work deserves. But we feel we have no option but to take this decision."

There have been no confirmed cases of the virus at the University. This announcement follows the Prime Minister's press conference regarding COVID-19 in which 53 cases have been confirmed thus far, including one in Northamptonshire. Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, said the UK will see "a lot more cases."

The Government has issued a public health campaign telling people to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly to prevent the spread of COVID-19. People have been told to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds and should use soap/hand sanitizer when getting into work or home, blowing their nose, sneezing, coughing or eating/handling food.
