Earlier this week, the MP for Buckingham and Bletchley voiced his support for the newly released Future Council Housing report, drawing on his experience of growing up in a council flat to emphasise the importance of council-owned properties.
On Tuesday, September 3, Callum Anderson, MP for the Buckingham and Bletchley constituency, attended the report's official launch in Westminster, where over 100 council landlords, led by Southwark Council, gathered to present five key solutions for the government to address the current crisis in council housing. The report warned that England’s council housing system is on the brink of collapse and emphasised the need for urgent government intervention to fulfil its housing commitments.
Callum Anderson MP said, “Having grown up in a council flat myself, I know how vital council-owned properties can play in providing people and their families with security and safety. Good report, good recommendations.”
The Future Council Housing report outlines a comprehensive roadmap to revitalise England’s council housing over the next decade. It highlights the financial strain on councils due to unsustainable models and erratic policy changes, with new analysis by Savills revealing that councils face a £2.2 billion funding gap by 2028.
Among the report's recommendations are calls for immediate action to restore lost revenue and unlock the potential for local authorities to partner with the government to deliver new affordable homes across the country.
