Residents have been left 'heartbroken' following the news that a local artisan bakery is set to close its doors.

Woodstock's Artisan Bakery has announced it will be closing at the end of this month.

In a statement on social media, owners say that inflation is the reason behind the closure and that they 'simply can't compete with the larger retailers' when it comes to price.

Woodstocks is the last bakery in Stony Stratford, located on the high street, and will be closing on Saturday 30th September.

In a notice of closure, the owners wrote:

'It is with great sadness that we must announce the closure of this business at the end of the month on SATURDAY 30th SEPTEMBER. It is the last bakery in the town and ends the tradition of hundreds of years.

'Inflation is the reason the business can no longer meet the costs of operating a viable business, and we simply can't compete with the larger retailers on price.

'All the staff would like to thank you, the local Stony customers, for your support over the years.

'Please continue to support the shop and its staff until it closes!'

Residents say they have been left 'heartbroken' following the news that the bakery business will be closing.

One resident commented: 'You absolutely shouldn’t feel the need to compete with larger retailers, as you offer something entirely unique and superior. So sorry you feel that it’s come to this and I echo everyone else when I say that this is a massive loss to our area. You’ve been a fantastic addition to the high street, with your bread and your smiling faces being a reason to keep popping in.'

Another added: 'This is utterly heart breaking! We’ve gotten our bread from you since you opened and I’m so sorry that inflation and like of support small businesses like yourself have received has meant you’ll have to close.

'Our High Street will be worse off without you and thank you to you and your staff for the delicious baked goods over the years.'
