'Awful' scenes as Milton Keynes swans left covered in oily residue

An oily substance has been spotted in the waters of the Grand Union Canal which has started to coat the local wildlife black.

A passerby took photos of the distressed swans, who were situated near bridge 75 of the Grand Union Canal near Great Linford.

The photos were posted to social media, prompting responses from multiple local organisations. The RSPCA said it was "awful to see birds affected like this."

A representative from the Canal River Trust replied: "Thanks for reporting this to us. I've sent a message to the local teams so that they can look into the oil spill and get this cleaned up."

The Swan Sanctuary have also been made aware of the issue and are believed to be currently investigating.
