Rubbish is piling up in car parks and spilling onto pavements in some areas.
Liberal Democrat Councillors are to propose a motion at Full Council tonight, calling on the City Council to hold management companies to account for the issues.
Management companies are often responsible for ensuring that bin and waste stores are clean and accessible and dealing with contaminated bins and sacks in blocks of flats, but with some failing to fulfil those responsibilities, rubbish is causing an eyesore and a health hazard for residents.
“I want to stress that not all management companies are failing to fulfil their responsibilities, but there is a portion that are,” said Councillor Sam Crooks, who represents Broughton ward, “ The City Council’s waste teams work incredibly hard, but they need cooperation from management companies. It’s time for those companies to step up, take responsibility, and clean up their own mess.”
Monkston Councillor Jenni Ferrans, added: “Overflowing rubbish isn’t just untidy, it poses a serious health risk for the community. The City Council must step in and take firm action on those that are neglecting their responsibilities.”
If the motion is passed, the City Council will continue to work with management companies to ensure they fulfil their waste responsibilities and consider using their enforcement powers to reduce the waste build up.
