Hospital staff and their families come together to celebrate the NHS’ 70th birthday

Arts for Health Milton Keynes invite hospital staff and their families to use art, creativity and the sense of community to help celebrate the NHS’ 70th birthday.

With the NHS officially turning 70 years old on Thursday 5 July, the Arts for Health MK team, a local charity supporting patient and staff wellbeing at Milton Keynes University Hospital, hosted an open ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ workshop on 23rd June at their workshop in Kingston, Milton Keynes where staff and their families were invited to create pieces of art that reflected the theme using a variety of different materials.

Led by artist Laura X Carle and funded by ART UK, the workshop proved hugely successful and provided a great opportunity to thank staff at the hospital for all of their hard work.

Arts for Health Project Manager, Sarah Hunt said, “Art is a great way to bring together families of all age ranges to channel creativity and enthusiasm. It was brilliant to see staff members from all departments of the hospital including infection control and maternity turn up with their families to celebrate this momentous birthday for the NHS.

“Hosting these workshops for hospital staff is something we are hoping to do more of as they provide an opportunity for individuals who may not know they have a creative side to discover it.”

The team will be working with ART UK to host a second event on the hospital site on Saturday 7 July which is open to staff and members of the public. The workshop will take inspiration from pieces of art across the hospital and will focus on creating giant family sculptures – emphasising how we all need, use and love the NHS.

The event will be taking place from 12pm – 3pm in the courtyard outside the Eaglestone Restaurant. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided. For further information, please contact Sarah.Hunt2@mkuh.nhs.uk.
