Are you over 65? Fight the flu with a free vaccine

Those of you who have experienced flu will know that it is a very unpleasant illness - one that can be particularly dangerous for people aged over 65.

Together with Age UK, NHS Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is urging those over 65 to book in for a free annual flu vaccination to help protect them against a potentially fatal illness.

Last winter 71% of adults over 65 in Milton Keynes were vaccinated against flu, leaving many older people at risk of flu and its potential complications including pneumonia.

Dr Nicola Smith, Chair of NHS Milton Keynes CCG, said:

“If you haven’t already, contact your GP surgery today to book a flu appointment, the vaccine is quick, safe and free if you are over 65. This year some pharmacies are offering the flu jab too. Please check with your local pharmacy whether they are offering the vaccination. Even if you have had the vaccination before, you need to get it again because the type of virus in circulation changes every year and so the vaccine changes too.

“Flu symptoms can be particularly severe for people over 65, particularly if you have an existing medical condition. By getting vaccinated you are significantly reducing your chances of developing flu over the coming winter months.”

Jane Palmer (CEO) Age UK Milton Keynes, said:

“Make sure you get your flu vaccination now and encourage others. Cold weather can be very harmful, especially for people aged 65 or older. It weakens the immune system, increases blood pressure, thickens the blood and lowers body temperature. This increases the risks of high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections.

“It’s also important to heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F), if you can although you might prefer your living room to be slightly warmer. Remember to keep your window closed on winter nights as breathing in cold air can be bad for your health as it increases the risk of chest infections.”
