Affordable housing plans for former fire and police station site in Milton Keynes

    Milton Keynes City Council has published a Draft Development Brief which outlines planning guidance for prospective developers of the former fire and police station site on Sherwood Drive.

    The planning blueprint, which is set to be decided next week, guides prospective developers on what the City Council would like to see on the three-acre site. It highlights how a mixed-use development would be preferred, and how any developer should follow the City Council’s strict environmental policies.

    As mentioned in the brief, there is opportunity to redevelop the site by building high-density housing (apartments), a hotel, café, restaurant or other local retail uses, alongside parking for residents.

    The City Council has also explained the importance of over 30% of properties being classed as affordabe, with this even increasing to 50% should the scheme create a ‘mixed and sustainable’ community to fit within the wider Bletchley area.

    Ward Councillor Nigel Long, who represents Bletchley Park, is keen for any prospective developer to consider 50% affordable housing on the site. He said: “Affordable housing is a key pillar of Plan:MK and I hope that any future developer realises its true importance by promising as much high-quality affordable housing as possbile. This is crucial in ensuring that future generations can afford to buy and rent homes in the area, rather than being pushed away due to soaring house prices. I hope that this Draft Development Brief proves successful in attracting developers who want to invest in Bletchley and its residents for years to come.”

    The site is currently owned by Milton Keynes Development Parternship (MKDP) and has remained vacant since demolition of the former police and fire station in 2021.

    Councillor Pete Marland, Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, added: “This site sits in a strategic location between Milton Keynes College and Bletchley Train Station. With the progression of East West Rail, we can expect to see interest in Bletchley continue to increase so it’s vital that this area becomes a real destination.

    "This Draft Development Brief prioritises high-quality affordable housing and amneties that provide real benefit to residents, and I look forward to working with prospective developers to bring these plans to life."
