A new green charity for the new city of Milton Keynes

New charity Sustainable MK launches later this month, with its focus on environmental issues.

Sustainable MK is taking over the Food Connect service which supports the community fridge network across Milton Keynes – collecting and distributing food that would otherwise be wasted.

Since 2020, Food Connect has collected more than 1,800 tonnes of food – which is the equivalent of 4.2 million meals.

It has also supported 1.3 million visits to a community fridge and covered more than 118,000 miles using e-cargo bikes and an e-van.

Working with 11 partners across the city, the charity will be looking to expand into other projects that support these aims.

“Sustainable MK will help maintain the fabulous work done in creating Food Connect and ensure that the environmental impact continues,” said Steve McNay, Chair of Sustainable MK.

“Supporting so many organisations, who help so many people, is the driving force behind Sustainable MK and the creation of this new charity means this can continue into the future.”

The charity will host a formal celebratory launch at The Old Bath House in Wolverton on September 20, as part of this year's Heritage Open Days programme.
