In early September, a heartfelt cycling initiative unfolds across Milton Keynes: “7 Days of Cycling for SMK Gateway.”
Led by Marie Bradburn, this week-long journey commemorates her late husband, Robin Bradburn, who was a staunch supporter of SMK Gateway and instrumental in securing land for The Seed Centre, which will be the charity’s permanent community hub.
SMK Gateway, founded in 2007, aims to tackle educational underachievement in Milton Keynes — particularly among disadvantaged communities — by providing mentoring, tutoring, exam support, and more. The Seed Centre promises to be a multi-use facility with a café, event hall, entrepreneurial spaces, and support services, which align with Robin’s vision for the local community of Heelands.
This challenge stretches from 5th to 11th September, weaving together seven themed routes across the city:
- Day 1 – Humble Beginnings: Tracing SMK Gateway’s history on International Day of Charity.
- Day 2 – Alumni Assemble: A ride with alumni through northern Milton Keynes.
- Day 3 – Community Culture: Celebrating a community culture and the diversity of our city — riders are encouraged to wear attire displaying their rich heritage.
- Day 4 – Learning Loop: Passing local schools of Milton Keynes who share SMK’s passion for education.
- Day 5 – More than Education: Visiting local services that support youth.
- Day 6 – Breaking the Cycle: Advocating mental health awareness in conjunction with National Suicide Prevention Day.
- Day 7 – Ladies Day: A women-focused ride to inspire female participation in cycling.
The campaign strikes a personal chord — SMK CEO Tony Oyakhire and Fundraising & Events Co-Ordinator Nicole Deegan have joined Marie in participating and fundraising, emphasizing solidarity and community spirit.
