Keepers at Woburn Safari Park are thrilled to announce the arrival of a magnificent new resident.
A 10-year-old male African lion named Lonka. The stunning big cat made his journey from Serengeti Park in Germany in a specialist transport, arriving on the 2nd of July.
Lonka the lion’s transfer is a significant milestone, with international animal moves paused following the global pandemic. After months of careful planning and dedication, the Park is celebrating this exciting new chapter for its African lion pride.
Lonka has settled into Kingdom of the Carnivores, where he is exploring his new surroundings and taking in the scents of the existing pride.
With his striking dark mane and powerful presence, Lonka has already made quite the impression on both keepers and visitors alike. Woburn is proud to offer such an incredible unique experience to visitors, seeing one of nature’s most awe-inspiring animals, in the heart of Bedfordshire parkland reserves. The new arrival has been spotted scent marking to claim his territory, showing curiosity toward his new home, and vocalising with deep, resounding roars.
“Male lions play a vital role as the heart of the pride, and we’re delighted to welcome Lonka to Woburn,” said Ben Davies, Head of Carnivores. “He’s a confident and impressive individual, and we’re hopeful he’ll soon take his place as king of the pride here at Woburn Safari Park.”
In the future, keepers hope to introduce Lonka to Zuri, the Park’s 10-year-old lioness. Zuri has previously raised several healthy cubs and is known for her excellent maternal instincts. With African lions listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature), the potential for a breeding partnership marks an exciting step forward in the Park’s commitment to conservation.
This royal new arrival is so much more than just a visual spectacle, he represents an ongoing effort to protect and preserve one of Africa’s most iconic species. Seeing Lonka in the Kingdom of the Carnivores drive-through and watching him settle into live with his new pride will certainly be a highlight for visitors to Woburn this summer.
