MKFM Welcomes Al's Pals to our Business Club

Al’s Pals is a local cancer charity that provides a lifeline for cancer patients and their families. The charity was founded in 2020 by Suzanne Brown after losing her father, Alan, to cancer.

During his treatment, Alan often expressed a need for someone to talk to - someone outside of his family who could listen without judgment. At the time, there was no such support available. Before he passed, Alan asked Suzanne to create a service that would ensure others didn’t face cancer alone. That promise became the heart of Al’s Pals.

Today, Al’s Pals is one of the leading emotional support services for cancer patients and their families, offering help both in hospital and at home. What sets the charity apart is its inclusive approach: support is provided to anyone affected by cancer, regardless of diagnosis or prognosis.

The charity’s primary goal is simple - to ensure no one faces cancer alone. Emotional support is often overlooked in cancer support, especially in the community. Al’s Pals is filling that gap by providing trained volunteers who offer companionship, a listening ear, and a safe space to talk through fears and feelings that patients often feel unable to share with family members.

In addition to this vital emotional support, Al’s Pals offers home-based counselling and psychological services for patients and their loved ones. These services are rare and deeply needed, helping individuals and families process the emotional impact of a diagnosis.

What makes Al’s Pals unique is its commitment to supporting families as much as patients. Every service offered to cancer patients is also available to their loved ones.

Many cancer patients and families feel abandoned after diagnosis, particularly if the prognosis isn’t immediately life-threatening. Often, ongoing support only appears at the end-of-life stage. But what about those living with cancer for years, under a constant cloud of uncertainty? Al’s Pals offers continued support for as long as it’s needed - even to the very end.

Support doesn’t stop after loss. Al’s Pals provides up to eight sessions of support, helping families navigate grief without feeling isolated. The charity also helps those in remission who may struggle to move forward, offering emotional support to rebuild their lives.

In just five years, Al’s Pals has supported thousands of people and has been invited to work with five hospitals and surrounding communities. Their goal is to become a regional hub for cancer support, offering services both in hospitals and homes.

The charity also offers digital support through the Al’s Pals and Me app, and runs support groups - currently in Olney, with another launching in Buckingham.

With over 40 trained volunteers and a dedicated board of trustees, Al’s Pals is making a real difference - one patient, one family, one conversation at a time.
