The Bedford Park Proms, one of the longest-running Proms events in the UK, took place last weekend.
With nearly 30 years of history, this annual concert remains a major highlight of the British summer, drawing music lovers from all corners of the country.
Founded almost three decades ago by promoter Mark Harrison, the Bedford Park Proms is part of the wider Bedford Summer Sessions concert series, which is curated and presented by the renowned promoters Cuffe & Taylor. As one of the premier events in the Summer Sessions line-up, the Proms continues to offer a unique opportunity to enjoy world-class music in an exceptional outdoor setting. The event is a fixture on the British cultural calendar, known for its welcoming atmosphere and top-tier performances.
This year’s concert was headlined by celebrated tenor Russell Watson, widely known as ‘The Voice.’ His stirring performance of Bring Him Home was a standout moment, with the audience moved by the depth and emotion of his vocals. Watson was joined on stage by the legendary Lesley Garrett CBE, whose voice remains as powerful and distinctive as ever. At 70 years old, Garrett’s performance was particularly poignant, following her recent battle with cancer, which had led her to fear she might lose her voice.
Garrett’s return to the stage was met with warm applause, and her collaboration with Watson highlighted the deep respect and friendship they’ve developed over many years of performing together. The pair’s vocal harmonies were paired with a stunning laser display, creating a memorable experience for those in attendance.
The concert was conducted by Robert Emery, who led the London Gala Orchestra and the Bedford Choral Society through an evening of powerful music. Emery’s lively wit and engaging commentary provided a light-hearted touch to the performance, adding to the relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere of the evening.
Promoted by Cuffe & Taylor, the Bedford Park Proms is part of the Bedford Summer Sessions, a concert series that brings a diverse range of performances to the region. While Proms events across the country have faced challenges in recent years, Bedford Park Proms continues to thrive, further solidifying its reputation as one of the UK’s leading Proms events.
With nearly 30 years of history and a commitment to showcasing world-class talent, Bedford Park Proms remains a key event in the Summer Sessions line-up and a highlight of the summer season.
