Milton Keynes to receive £1.6 million in bid to boost electric car charging across the city

Milton Keynes is set to receive £1.6 million from the government to go towards providing more electric car charging points across the city.

More than £1.6 million is being provided to Milton Keynes City Council as part of the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund to help bring more charging points to the city.

Currently, the city has the highest amount of public electric charging points in England per 100,000 population outside of Coventry and London.

More than £10 million of Government funding has gone towards electric cars since 2016 as the government focusses on phasing out the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030.

Industry statistics suggest that over 1 in 5 new cars sold in 2022 had a plug.

Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, said: “This Conservative Government is absolutely committed to tackling climate change and reducing emissions so I’m delighted to see further investment into public electric car charging points in Milton Keynes.

“We’ve led the way on this for so long and I’ve been championing the cause down in Parliament so it’s great to see we’re being listened to and we can make sure it becomes easier and easier to own an electric car in MK.”

Iain Stewart, the MP for Milton Keynes South, commented: “More and more drivers in Milton Keynes are looking to make the shift to an electric car. That is why I am delighted that the Conservative Government is providing more funding for new electric charging points in Milton Keynes, providing electric car users the certainty that they will be able to access a charging point when they need it.”

Last month, the City Council announced it was partnering with Kerbo Charge and trialling brand new electric car charging technology. The product is installed in tarmac or stone pavements directly outside a customer’s home, creating a narrow channel (32mm deep, 39mm wide) with a hinged lid in which the user can easily place a charging cable, running it to their car with no trip hazards from trailing cables.

Allego is one of Europe’s leading EV charging companies, with a network of more than 40,000 charge points across 16 European countries. The new charging hub at the stadium is fully accessible and includes 6 ultra-fast charge points through 3 dual-socket 300kW chargers.

The hub will allow visitors to Stadium MK, as well as residents and passing traffic, to charge their electric vehicle whenever they need, and in no more than 10-15 minutes.
