Residents have until 5pm today to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate, which is needed by anyone wishing to vote in person at this year’s local elections who doesn’t already have an accepted form of ID.
Milton Keynes voters will need to show an accepted form of photographic ID to vote in person at the local elections on 4th May.
Photo ID that can be used includes a passport, driving license, or concessionary travel pass, such as an older person’s bus pass or the MK ‘All in One Card’. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

People who don’t have any of these can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate here but must do so before 5pm on 25 April to ensure they’re able to vote in May’s local elections.
Anyone unable to make it to a polling station on 4 May still has time to apply for a proxy vote, which is where someone can vote on your behalf. The deadline to apply is also 5pm on 25 April.
Why do I need ID?
The requirement for voter ID was introduced in the UK’s Government Elections Act last year and residents are being urged to make sure they are ready to vote in May by checking they have an accepted form of ID.
What elections are taking place in May?
On May 4th, local elections will be taking place. There are elections for all 19 Borough Wards in Milton Keynes, with one vacancy in each ward except for Central Milton Keynes ward which will have two vacancies.
Milton Keynes elects a third of its Councillors every year.
There are a few notable names seeking re-election in this year's local elections, including Milton Keynes City Council leader Peter Marland (Labour) and deputy leader Robin Bradburn (Lib Dem)
Currently, Milton Keynes is run by the Progressive Alliance, a Labour and Liberal Democrat coalition.
With a General Election looming in 2024, the 2023 local elections are predicted to be a big indicator for next year's results.
