MKFM Review: Fisherman's Friends - The Musical

Mrs. D what's to see? Mrs. D from the MK Breakfast Show was so excited to return to MK Theatre last night to watch Fisherman's Friends - The Musical with her friend Jenny, and here is her review...

Arriving at the Theatre we were greeted by a group of musicians giving us a taste of what is to come with the lilting sea shanties and foot tapping. Crowds were standing listening to the music and enjoying the catchy tunes being played.

The production, based on a true story, starts in Port Isaac where a group of Cornish fishermen keep the folk songs alive by singing in the local pub. A producer arrives in the small village and upon hearing the singing sensations promises they’ll star at Glastonbury.

As the show unfolds, we laughed at the jaunts of the men in the London clubs, and cried as disaster struck on the seas.

Fisherman’s Friends was a non-stop, infectious collection of fantastic songs and excellent acting supported by the wonderful orchestra which played an instrumental part in telling the story.

Packed with sea shanties, the play was a journey of camaraderie, friendship, love and music.

The star of the show in my opinion was Alwyn, played by Parisa Shahmir, who’s singing was so hauntingly beautiful and memorable. What a star!

One of the best musicals I have seen, and one I would go to watch again and again to experience the infectious, energetic and life affirming underlying story of friendship.
