A new project to create a section of redway linking the Lakes Estate and the Blue Lagoon Nature Reserve to the rest of Bletchley was marked today (22/03) with a turf-cutting by Councillor Emily Darlington.
Once completed, the new connection between Drayton Road and Drayton Park School will allow pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter users to travel safely to and from this area.
It also links it to the wider redway network, covering over 200 miles around the city.
The work will include:
- A new Toucan crossing on Drayton Road with two raised tables to slow down the traffic along Drayton Road.
- Extending the 30mph speed limit reduction up to Fern Grove improve road safety near the new crossing
- A new 62-metre length of new redway across the open space area connecting to an existing 3-metre wide cycleway in the Lakes Estate.
- Upgrading an existing cycleway in the Lakes Estate to redway standards
Councillor Emily Darlington, Cabinet Member for Public Realm said: “Better connectivity is so important for the vitality of our city as Milton Keynes continues to grow and no area should be left behind.
“This new redway route is key to linking up all parts of the city from new development areas to the older towns like Bletchley.
“Making it as easy as possible for people to choose greener, more sustainable ways of travelling for local or city-wide journeys is essential to reduce our carbon emissions and improve air quality.”
Funded by the Active Travel Plan to encourage more journeys through walking or cycling, this project will cost around £400k and will take around 11 weeks to complete.
