Win £100 to spend on your local high street as part of the Council’s campaign to support local businesses

MK Council is giving six lucky people an opportunity to win £100 each to spend on their local high street as part of a campaign to support small independent businesses in response to COVID-19.

To be in with a chance of winning, people are being encouraged to take a picture of themselves when they are out safely shopping on their high street and to share it on social media using #ShopLocalMK and tagging @MKCouncil and @MKFM. The six winners will be awarded £100 to spend across five shops on their chosen high street, including Newport Pagnell, Woburn Sands, Wolverton, Olney, Stony Stratford and Bletchley.

Cabinet Member for Economy and Culture, Councillor Carole Baume said: “Small businesses are the bedrock of our high streets and communities, so it’s essential that we support them.  The economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting smaller independent businesses hard and it’s up to local people to help where they’re able to do so.

“I’d encourage people to get involved in this campaign to support our high streets while remembering to take the necessary precautions, including regular hand washing, wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. Good luck and I look forward to seeing all the pictures.”

The competition runs until 30 October. For more information, please see MK Council’s Twitter page @MKCouncil.

Generating opportunities for small businesses and start-ups is a central part of MK Council’s £2.25m economic recovery plan, which includes:

    • Giving small businesses access to immediate subsidised legal, tax and other support that will help them weather the pandemic, via the Federation for Small Businesses.

    • Funding a ‘Wonder Lab’ hub for tech entrepreneurs, and the MK Artificial Intelligence Development programme to develop local skills in the industries of the future.

    • Supporting new start-ups by running virtual events with the Pop-up Business School, giving practical help and advice to aspiring entrepreneurs.
