'We are all proud of Milton Keynes', Dons chairman tells MKFM

It comes as Milton Keynes has officially been given city status.

Today (20/5), it has been announced that Milton Keynes has received city status as part of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

38 towns in total applied for the civic honour, in which EIGHT towns have been successful.

The push for MK to be crowned a city received a wealth of public support from residents, with hundreds submitting photographs of their favourite local places and using social media to shout about how ‘MK was built to be a city’.

MKFM has been speaking to key figures in Milton Keynes, celebrating the big win and a huge day for our new 'city'.

Pete Winkelman, MK Dons chairman, told MKFM: "What great news to wake up to this morning. Absolutely fantastic.

"So many people have tried so hard over the years and I've got to say a great message of support and well done to everybody who was involved in the bid this time."

MK's crowning as city comes after three previous unsuccessful applications over the last 22 years. In 2000, an application was submitted for the millennium - then again in 2002 for the Golden Jubilee, and 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee.

"We've been a new city for ages, but now, we are a real city," he said.

The chairman told MKFM that after the heartbreaks of the last season with the Dons, this is "really good news" to take us into the summer.

"We can say it with pride, we can be really proud that we have come of age, and we have become a city. Again, it's really fitting, we are the home of great events in Milton Keynes."

With My Chemical Romance currently on at the stadium, bringing huge attention from around the world, the UEFA Women's EUROs are also heading to MK this summer.

"Absolutely fitting that we should become a city and absolutely brilliant news."
