Coronavirus-stricken couple rush to marry at Milton Keynes Hospital before groom is transferred to ICU

A local couple, both sick in hospital with COVID-19, decided to tie the knot before the groom was rushed to intensive care.

Elizabeth Kerr, a 31-year-old NHS nurse, and Simon O'Brien, a 36-year-old ambulance worker, were taken to Milton Keynes Hospital in the same ambulance earlier this month after suffering badly from the virus.

They were both planning on getting married in June last year, but the pandemic meant that their plans had to be put on hold.

After being told by doctors that Simon's condition was deteriorating, and he would soon be placed in a medically induced coma, the couple decided to hold off on treatment to wed.

Hospital staff delayed his intubation and quickly planned a wedding, and the lovebirds married in the middle of the covid ward on 12th January, three days after they arrived in hospital.

The catering department provided a wedding cake, and hospital nurse Hannah Cannon was the witness who also filmed the ceremony for family and friends.

Elizabeth, the bride, told Reuters: "They told me that we wouldn't be able to get married after all, because they were going to have to intubate Simon and put him under.

"But they held off for another hour. And he just, just rallied in that time, just long enough for us to get married."

Thankfully Simon's condition has since improved and he is out of the coma, and recovering alongside his wife.

The newlyweds believe their love for each other kept them alive. Elizabeth added: "If we hadn't had each other and we hadn't been given that opportunity to get married, I don't think both of us would be here now."
