Tributes pour in as Milton Keynes architect passes away

Milton Keynes Central station was among one of the many places Mr Baker helped design

Long-time resident and former Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC) architect Kenneth Baker has passed away, aged 79, at his home on 8th January 2021.

Mr Baker was a prominent figure in the local architectural community, having been part of the team that designed the city centre. He was extremely passionate about the area and was well known for his attention to detail, alongside his innovative construction methods.

He first began working for MKDC in the early 1970s where he was initially tasked with creating road layouts for the centre of Milton Keynes. He would then go on to help with the creation of many neighbourhood landmarks, including Milton Keynes Central railway station, Campbell Park, Church of Christ the Cornerstone as well as Milton Keynes shopping centre – the first and only Grade 2 listed shopping centre in the UK.

Many heartfelt tributes to Mr Baker were posted on social media. On Twitter, Andy Swanell said: “I’m very saddened to hear of Ken’s passing. I worked with him over a long period of time and found him to be a very likeable man. He was very clever and brought great skill and versatility to everything he did. RIP Ken.”

MK Gallery posted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ken Baker. As an architect for Milton Keynes Development Corporation, Ken's influence can be found throughout MK. He will be greatly missed, but we are grateful for the inspiration that he provided to us all.”

Mr Baker’s passing comes just days before the 54th anniversary of Milton Keynes.
