Tributes paid to 11-year-old boy who passed away following high profile campaign for his lifesaving treatment

Dean Mandabva, from Buckingham, has sadly passed away after an ongoing fight with a brain tumour.

The 11-year-old was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), the deadliest form of childhood cancer, in June 2019.

After various scans and tests, he underwent treatment on the NHS, including 30 sessions of radiotherapy, but eventually no further treatments were available.

Dean's parents David and Mercy, both NHS nurses, then decided to launch a campaign called #Dean'sBraveFight to raise £90,000 for potentially life-saving treatment in Spain.

Over £58,000 had been raised for Dean's treatment which meant he and his family travelled to Spain earlier this summer to commence the treatment called oncothermia.

Throughout July and August, Dean's family provided updates and wrote that there was "some improvement" and that Dean was "tolerating" the treatment.

At the end of August, Dean finished his treatment and the family had made arrangements to come home. However, just a day later, Dean fell ill with respiratory symptoms.

He was taken to A&E in Costa Del Sol where he was admitted to an infant's hospital, and sadly, Dean passed away last Thursday (3/9).

"Your prayers, emails, text messages, kind words and all the resources you gave were very much appreciated," say Dean's parents. "We would like to thank you all for your support throughout Dean's journey."
